Zhi-De Deng, S.B., M.Eng.

Zhi-De Deng received the S.B. degree in physics in 2006, and the S.B. and M.Eng. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, with minor in economics in 2007 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. In September 2007, he joined the Division of Brain Stimulation and Therapeutic Modulation, where he is the first student co-mentored by Engineering and Psychiatry Departments. His thesis project focuses on the development of TMS coil technology, and modeling of the electric field distribution induced by magnetic seizure therapy (MST) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

As an undergraduate and masters student, he was involved in biomedical applications of electrical engineering in the Neurophysiology and Neuroengineering Lab at Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. There he conducted research on the nonlinear dynamics of physiological systems, developed noninvasive clinical diagnostic tools for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome based on heart rate variability, algorithms using Volterra series models to quantify the intrinsic deterministic chaos of nonlinear systems subjected to noise perturbations, and algorithms for ECG QRS-complex detection. In the summer of 2004, he was an intern in the Department of Anesthesiology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he studied the effect of oxygen on the inflammatory response secondary to cardiopulmonary bypass during cardiothoracic surgery.

Mr. Deng is a student member in several professional societies, including the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the American Physical Society, the Society for Neuroscience and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is the recipient of the NIH T32 Clinical and Translational Science Award and the New York Times College Scholarship.
